2004 Summer Camp to begin Friday morning

Due to the tight schedule, summer camp will be starting Friday morning. Black Belt testing will start Friday afternoon. Due to the change, we will need to reserve the cabins one more night (Thursday night). Please send another check for $17 to Jim Kreinbrink (address listed on the registration form). The cost per night is a little higher to offset the $48 in reservation fees the forest service is charging. Other information:
1. Pets
There is a $10 pet fee. It isn't per night, so it can be split between members bringing pets. It is per cabin and payable when we arrive.
2. Cars:
Only two parking spaces per cabin exist, but we can bring other vehicles and park them in the lot. Still $5 per car per night, though. Payable when we arrive. Please don't prepay the pet or parking fee(too hard to track).

Summer Camp 2001
The 2001 SakiDoKwan Summer Camp was a tremendous success. The theme this year was "Back to Basics," and instruction focused on the many aspects of Tae Kwon Do and Hapkido training. Master Petty led the Basic Techniques and Tae Kwon Do Patterns on Friday and Saturday. The martial spirit of the participants was very high, with one working herself nearly to exhaustion in the scorching New Mexico sun. Masters Petty, Kaumo and Barbero led the Self Defense segment on Saturday afternoon, which included advanced Hapkido and Tae Kwon Do techniques as well as Knife and Short Stick defenses. On Saturday night, "war games" were held. Participants were armed with light bamboo staffs, and split into two teams. Team Two successfully invaded the camp, while Team One tried in vain to defend! Sunday morning included a rematch, where Team One regained their honor. Step sparring followed, and Circle sparring marked the end of the camp. The Closing Ceremony included an Awards Ceremony for Master Barbero. Participants of the Camp included students and instructors from West Virginia, Colorado and New Mexico. Approximately 20 people total attended. See the Summer Camp 2001 Discussion Area.

3rd Annual Sakidokwan Summercamp was a success!
On July 16-19 in the mountains of Western Wyoming, Instructors and students converged to workout together, learn from each other, discuss Kwan business and have fun. The highlight of this years camp was Master Petty's guidance through an ancient Sword Form, which was then followed by a sword sparring contest. The champions were:

1st place - Page Gunderson, III Dan, of Rock Springs, Wyoming
2nd place - Wade Larson, I Dan, of Lyman, Wyoming
3rd place - Jim Kreinbrink, II Dan, of Denver, Colorado
4th place - a tie between Master Jospeh Petty, VII Dan, of Albuquerque, New Mexico and Christa Kreinbrink, Senior Red Belt, of Evanston, Wyoming
All participants showed tremendous spirit and courage in the contest, which used wooden swords and only forearm guards for protection.

After the tournament, Sakidokwan instructors shared techniques from Jujitsu(led by Page gunderson, III Dan), Hapkido(led by Master Kaumo, V Dan), Tae Kwon Do (led by Master Petty, VII Dan) and Kung Fu(led by Jim Kreinbrink, II Dan).

Master Petty considers a move back to Rock Springs, WY
Although not final, Master Petty may be moving back to Rock Springs, to accept a full time position at Sweetwater County Memorial Hospital. Page Gunderson, III Dan, expects Master Petty's return to Rock Springs to bring many former students back into the art.

Martial Arts causes less injuries per year than playground equipment!
I saw a news clipping the other day with statistics from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commision regarding sports injuries and emergency room visits. Bicycling, basketball, wrestling and football were at the top. Martial arts ranked number 30 on the list, after playground equipment! I will try to get a link up to the actual report....

A study confirms what every martial artist knows
The anticipation of pain is a different experience (usually worse!) than the pain itself.
